Rigel
Rigel ili alfa Oriona (lat. α Orionis), je najsjajnija zvezda u sazvežđu Oriona i šesta najsjajnija zvezda na noćnom nebu, odmah iza Kapele. Nalazi se na udaljenosti od 775 svetlosnih godina i zrači 40.000 puta više od Sunca što je čini jednom od najsjajnijih zvezda u Mlečnom putu. Površinska temperatura Rigela je 11000 K što uzrokuje plavo-belu boju zvezde. Kako Rigel znatnim delom zrači UV zracima, znatan deo njegovog sjaja je zapravo nevidljiv golom oku, a njegov ukupni sjaj je 66.000 puta jači od Sunčevog. Ona formira levu nogu Oriona, po čemu je i dobila naziv koji vodi poreklo od arapskog naziva. Rigel je po strukturi zapravo sistem od tri zvezde:
- Rigel A, koji je B8Iab[19] plavi superdžin i oko koga orbitira binarni sistem koji čine:
- Rigel B, koji je 2.5 puta veći od Sunca
- Rigel C, koji je 1.9 puta veći od Sunca

Neki smatraju da u sistemu postoji i četvrta zvezda, ali je to tumačenje mahom neprihvaćeno i efekti koji se tumače kao četvrta zvezda se pripisuju nestabilnosti Rigela A. Zahvaljujući svojoj jakoj svetlosti, zvezda osvetljava i nekoliko maglina od kojih su najpoznatije:
- Maglina Veštičija glava
- Maglina Orion, koja je od Zemlje udaljena duplo više nego Rigel
Rigel A je zvezda sa masom 17 puta većom od Sunca i polako je započeo njen proces umiranja jer, više ne fuzioniše vodonik u helijum već helijum u ugljenik i kiseonik. Zvezda će u daljoj budućnosti završiti možda kao supernova ili će iza sebe ostaviti veoma gustog belog patuljka od kiseonika i neona.
